Getting Started
We can offer you a variety of EDI and XML integration solutions depending on your situation and budget.
If you are new to EDI, or have a new business process you need to implement, we usually start with a business BluePrint.
This consists of 6 steps:
- Interviews with Key internal management or resources to understand the scope of the requirements
- Review of Guidelines or specs from trading partner requesting an EDI implementation.
- Discussion as whether you wish to outsource your mapping or purchase and control the mapping and data processing in-house.
- Send a questionnaire to your trading partners to better understand which transactions they are targeting, what standard (EDI X12, or UN/EDIFACT, RosettaNet, OAGi, OASIS, or any number of XML standards), their version, and their current capability. We have a template already created that is simple, but complete.
- Internal review of recommended processes for your architecture, and any customization work.
- Evaluation of resources for support of all phases of the testing, custom programming (if necessary), and configuration of your ERP system.
Business Requirements
Once your processes have been evaluated, we will create a detailed Business Requirements Spec, which maps the process to the target fields in
your financial or ERP system. For outgoing processes, we will determine where the data exists in your ERP system for the extract of information.
Guideline Creation
We recommend guideline creation as part of your EDI/ecommerce implementation. We believe in guideline creation to “fast track” your implementations, save costs, empower internal resources as they can send guidelines to customer and other trading partners. It also documents your EDI processes for your internal resources and SOX requirements. However, the guidelines are only effective when well designed and the various business scenarios are addressed and defined with examples. We prefer the product from GEFEG (http://www.gefeg.com/en/index.htm), but have worked with the leading Guideline products. Softshare’s Delta has a guideline creation feature in it, so additional software purchase for guideline creation is not required. For more information on guidlelines press here. guideline.pdf
Outsourcing Tools, RFQ and Vendor Selection
We have partnered with Softshare to provide US or European-based outsourcing (onsourcing) solutions. We will work with you to integrate the EDI messages into your financial system, or design a temporary “rip & read” process so you may move into production quickly. You have the benefit of working in the same time zones of your business days. Costs are competitive to outsourcing offshore due to years of implementation expertise, professionalism, and a low cost mapping solution.
If you firm wishes to consider several solution providers, we know the key players and using our unique processes we can interview your required number of firms. We understand some of the hidden costs, industry reputations, and can help guide you in designing a successful program with your provider.
We are also the inventor of the "EDI Outsourcing Exit Strategy". This addresses how you can design your outsourcing program so if you decide to later move to another provider, or move to an in-house solution, your IP is protected and the impact AND COST of the transition is minimized.
We have written RFQ’s, and can help you structure your RFQ so that nearly all of the technical and procedural questions can be addressed before the contract is signed.
EDI/XML Design
During this phase we map the business requirement to EDI standards. We will follow suggested practices of the industry associations. Users often believe that these business practices and standard usages are predetermined. However, there is great flexibility in how the standards can be applied.
Mapping
In this Phase of the project, the technical specification are mapped in the translator. The mapping process consists of a source document, example a Purchase Order X12 in the case of an inbound EDI Order; and a target document such as an SAP IDOC or an Oracle Extension. Naturally once the data has been mapped, different test scenarios will be tested.
Custom Consulting
We can work with you on a specific project that is not necessarily EDI related. For example, we worked with a major client on the documentation of a POS system for distributors' POS and inventory data.
